What’s involved in taking on a new apprentice?

A training agreement formalises the relationship between an apprentice, employer, and the training provider.

Here’s what each party is responsible for.

    Employer
    • Supervises the apprentice throughout their training according to industry requirements.
    • Ensures a registered workplace assessor or verifier assesses on-job work.
    • Releases the apprentice for off-job training.
    • Provides a safe working environment.
    ICE
    • Provides off-job training and necessary assessment resources.
    • Provides pastoral care with an Apprentice Manager.
    • Provides up-to-date learning progress reports.
    • Awards certificates when the apprentice is qualified.
    Apprentice
    • Completes all required training and assessments each year

ICE training courses are currently held in specialised training centres in Auckland (currently East Tamaki – moving to Highbrook in March 2025), Otaki, Christchurch and Dunedin. Watch this space!

    Apprentice Managers

Apprentice Managers are the people who will ensure your apprentice stays on track. They become the first point of contact for both you and your apprentice. This pastoral care forms an essential part of how we comply with the TEC Code of Good Practice.

    Fees and Subsidies

    Apprenticeship Boost

The Apprenticeship Boost is now available until June 2028 and encourages employers to hire and train apprentices by offering a financial incentive.

You can get up to $500 a month, per apprentice, not including GST. If you’re GST registered, you’ll be paid the amount plus GST.

Employers interested in the Apprenticeship Boost can find detailed information on eligibility criteria, subsidy rates, and the application process on the Work and Income site.

    Fees Free Changes

Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Policy clarification and what it means for you.

In 2025, there will be fees-free policy changes, and here is an outline of what this means for our apprentices and trainees, or anyone thinking about signing up.

    • Signed on before 2025: You will have your fees covered for 24 months unless your eligibility finishes prior to that as a result of you using up your full entitlement as per the original fees free policy.
    • Signing on in 2025: You come under ‘final year fees free’ if you are eligible to receive it, this covers the final 24 months of training fees in a work-based apprenticeship.

More information visit our new Fees Free Policy information page or go to the official TEC website.

    Training Fees

Fees for apprentices are charged on a weekly basis at $43.68 incl. GST. Payment is set up with a direct debit to ICE (Part of Skills Group).

What’s involved in the apprentice qualification?

We have lots of information on qualifications in roofing. An Apprentice Manager can discuss requirements and assessment modules for each qualification with you.

While ICE has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information on this page, it is advisable to independently verify details and check for any updates or changes, as information may be subject to modifications over time
